Of the 12 million tons of zinc produced yearly
- over 50% is used to coat metals to stop them from rusting
- 14% is used for making zinc based alloys to supply the die casting industry
- 10% is used to make brass and bronze
- large amounts are used for roofing, gutters, and down-pipes
