Zinc is a naturally occurring element found in rock, soil, air, water, and the biosphere, making it the 23rd most abundant element. It is obtained from the minerals zinc blende (sphalerite) (ZnS), calamine, franklinite, smithsonite (ZnCO3), willemite, and zincite (ZnO). Yearly there is about 5,020,000 tons of zinc produced world wide. Though zinc ore is extracted from more than 50 countries the most common production areas are the USA, Canada, Australia, Austria, Russia and Turkey.
